Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
