What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
