Thrice-crowned National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 to the Miami Heat.

The star player was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half in an inadvertent contact with teammate Jones.

The other player stepped on the footwear of the MVP, and he instantly collapsed to the court clutching his knee.

The 30-year-old, who tops the league season in boards and assists, recorded a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the game before sustaining the injury.

The player is scheduled for an scan on the following day to determine the extent of the issue.

"Right away, he realized something was wrong," stated Nuggets coach Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Any player who gets hurt, that's difficult, most notably somebody as special as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"We'll move on together. Obviously, at this moment, I am more worried just about Jokic personally and the frustration of going through a situation like that."
