Those $150m Players Evolving into a Human Highlight Reel
The NBA campaign starts now, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie pair of biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence signals a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ backcourt duo Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as key starters for contending teams, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of Australia’s top sporting earners.
But they are not alone. A group of 14 Aussies are set to compete for playing time across the NBA, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
Following protracted discussions with the Chicago Bulls, the guard finally signed his new deal worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four seasons last month. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is cheap for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. The reluctance for the Bulls management to pay top dollar means the young star begins this season with a point to make.
After being moved by the Thunder at the start of last campaign, he observed as his old team charged to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Chicago aim to reach the postseason in the less competitive East, he will have to show his scoring and defence are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the NBA’s fringe.
Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth
Daniels signed the same deal as his counterpart this week, and after his most-improved player award last season, the Atlanta guard’s career has skyrocketed in Atlanta following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders, and led the league in steals with 3.0 spg – more than one whole steal per game greater than the tally of the runner-up.
Performing next to dynamic Trae Young in Atlanta, the 22-year-old can be effective this season as a playmaking option and defensive stopper as long as the Hawks make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his three-point shooting, which was below league average last season, and continue to enhance his distribution and attacking, he could become one of the association's most versatile players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana forward the rookie has emerged as a fan favourite in the state following a series of highlight-reel slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to label him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a while”, and an invite to the All-Star slam dunk competition could be on the table.
Following playing just 8 mpg per contest over 50 appearances in his rookie campaign, the former college player is in contention for a Pacers lineup that might favor youth following injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Playmaker Proctor fell in the June draft down to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavaliers are favourites to make the Finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a first-year player drafted in the second round to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned time in pre-season, and his NBA-ready shot offers him a chance to make an impact.
Playing Time Squeeze Looms for Experienced Group
Veteran centre Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting five spot in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the start of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to young centres Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play regular action if the team find themselves competitive. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is likely to be deployed as a defensive spark in a reserve role.
In the Hornets, Josh Green’s summer shoulder surgery has left him with no return date to return. The 24-year-old still has a contract for next season, but will not want to allow his teammates at the rebuilding Charlotte too much advantage. And a physical issue has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has been absent for key pre-season chances in the Mavericks.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are unlikely to see much, if any, court time this season. Veteran Joe Ingles is back in the Timberwolves, but appears to be primarily a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Golden State Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be aiming to win playing time alongside Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
Should anyone question Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a workout video shared on his social media recently, showing the 37-year-old is still in form and focused on securing another NBA contract.
What Simmons is thinking is uncertain after an off-season in his homeland, going fishing and playing with a football. Although he posted on social media recently to reject rumors he was done, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to return to the league.
