The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
People have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the morning session ended without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, young Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist one woman remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the conflict to conclude in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of that day in the west side district, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city said additional victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
