New York's next mayor states plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly after his triumph in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will forever remain inside me and my work," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
