Meteorologists have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, so additional clothing vital, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Alerts Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this meant the weather could to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
