France to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
