Dominant Hearts Overpower Meek The Hoops to Go 8 Points Clear
At a glance
- Kyziridis & Shankland earn victory for the hosts and send them eight ahead at summit
- Callum McGregor cancelled out early Murray own goal
- Hosts extend 13 games without defeat for the first occasion in over two decades
The dominant Edinburgh side powered eight points clear of Celtic at the summit of the Scottish top flight to bolster their early-season championship claims and worsen the struggles around Brendan Rodgers' side.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and Lawrence Shankland's penalty gave the Hearts team a 3-1 lead that the title holders could not overcome.
The young defender - one of three youngsters in the Celtic XI - scored an own goal in the early stages to put Hearts ahead at a energetic Tynecastle, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the penalty.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had quickly cancelled out the first goal, and Benjamin Nygren almost put Celtic in front, choosing placement over power and allowing Alexander Schwolow to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side regained dominance to hand the visitors to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Edinburgh side a commanding advantage at the top of the table.
The last time they were this far ahead was in 2005-06 under George Burley, when they ended as runners-up - a rare instance that a team has not secured the title having held such a lead in the last three decades.
McInnes, whose former team were runners-up to the champions on four occasions, has been working hard to downplay title talk, as the club seek their maiden league title since the 1960s.
Rodgers has seen it all before at the club - both perfect and shaky beginnings to a season. He's yet to finish second best.
But on the weekend's performance, this Hearts team showed they need to be taken seriously.
Match Analysis: The hosts Capitalize of Weakened Celtic
The Edinburgh side started with the self-assurance of a side unbeaten in the league this season - the popular attacker poked a cross in for the striker to stab wide.
The Glasgow team didn't aid their cause with some uncharacteristic carelessness in possession and they buckled under their initial test.
A headed effort from Braga was tipped onto the woodwork by the Celtic keeper and Shankland's return ball was turned into the net by the hapless defender, in for the absent center-back.
The away side found their rhythm and started building moves. From a flowing attack, Sebastian Tounekti released Tierney to set up the captain, who slotted home.
Apart from the Nygren chance, Celtic found it hard to generate chances for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his replacement Shin Yamada amid the unavailability of injured forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda.
The home team regained their intensity and versatility in attacking from across the final third. Kyziridis, one of the finds of the club's relationship with shareholder Tony Bloom's Jamestown Analytics, struck low past Schmeichel from the edge of the box.
Immediately after, Murray tripped the midfielder in the right side of the box and the penalty taker converted. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had substitute Ageu not been stopped by Schmeichel.
Celtic's second half was partially encapsulated in a couple of moments involving record signing Arne Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in sharp opposition to his midweek exploits in the continental victory over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
What They Said
The Hearts manager: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games week in, week out.
"Our strength lies in, is good technical ability. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here before. Recent additions are eager to show that.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's crucial for us to keep winning. We've got loads to do, loads to do. After the first two rounds is typically a benchmark of where you are."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the ball went back as a line so when they play it, they should have players offside but didn't. We have got to do better with the attempt.
"There's still so many points to play for. It's still so early. It's just nine matches. Clearly, being eight adrift is not ideal. The comfort is there's so many games to play.
"Our attention must turn on the present and look to achieve greater stability and better performance in our play."
