Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
