Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
